Range
Common throughout the Florida panhandle
and its range has almost been extended to
the Altlantic coast.
Habitat
Oak forest, pinelands, hardwood
hammocks, strands of cypress. They also
adapt well to manmade disturbed areas and
farms.
"White Oak"
One of the more sought after variants is the
"White Oak" phase near the Gulf coast at
the junction of the panhandle and the
peninsula. In these, the greyish background
color is almost white and make it a very
attractive snake.

Grey rat snakes are large and commonly
the most encountered snake in rural
farming areas. They are well adapted to
climbing and are often found in the rafters
of barns, perched up on things in garages,
or in trees. It the springtime, they can be
seen sunning themselves in the morning
and if near water, basking on brances that
overhang the water.

Range
found throughout most of Florida and the
Keys. They also live in a narrow strip along
the Atlantic coast through Georgia, South
Carolina and North Carolina.

Habitat
swamps, and are also common in
abandoned buildings and barns. They
probably got their nickname "chicken
snake" from numerous barn yard sightings.
